Located in the province of Siena, Castiglione d'Orcia rises on a hilltop spur overlooking the Val d'Orcia, a valley of Pliocene origin famous for its clay hills, solitary cypresses and gentle rolling scenery. The municipal territory is extensive and includes the well-known hamlets of Bagno Vignoni, Rocca d'Orcia and Vivo d'Orcia, the latter already on the slopes of Monte Amiata. The Orcia river runs through the valley not far from the main village, which lies close to towns such as Pienza, San Quirico d'Orcia and Montalcino, in a strategic position along the ancient routes linking Siena to southern Tuscany.
History and origins
The origins of Castiglione d'Orcia date back to the early Middle Ages, when the territory was disputed between Sienese power and local feudal families for control of the routes toward Monte Amiata. A symbol of this history is the Rocca di Tentennano, an imposing fortress built on a rocky spur above the hamlet of Rocca d'Orcia, a lookout and defensive point along the valley. The painter and sculptor Lorenzo di Pietro, known as il Vecchietta, one of the leading figures of fifteenth-century Sienese art, was also born in the municipality. Falling under Sienese influence, the area long retained a role as a strategic outpost controlling the southern Val d'Orcia.
Nature and landscape
The landscape of Castiglione d'Orcia is an integral part of the Val d'Orcia, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its harmony between nature and human intervention: clay hills, rows of cypresses, cultivated fields and scattered farmhouses alternate across the hills. Toward the south, the municipal territory rises to the wooded slopes of Monte Amiata, with beech and chestnut woods offering a cool, humid environment in sharp contrast to the sun-drenched countryside of the valley below. In the hamlets of Bagno Vignoni and Vivo d'Orcia, thermal waters and springs have shaped the use of the land for centuries.

The historic center of Castiglione d'Orcia, with its stone lanes and main square, is ideal for a relaxed walking visit, offering the chance to admire artworks linked to Sienese tradition kept in the municipal buildings. Not far away, the Rocca di Tentennano offers a view stretching across the entire Val d'Orcia. In the hamlet of Bagno Vignoni, visitors can stroll around the historic thermal pool at the center of the village, while in Vivo d'Orcia it is possible to visit the area of the ancient hermitage and the springs on the slopes of Monte Amiata. The area is also well suited to walks and hikes between the valley's villages.
Flavors and traditions
The cuisine of Castiglione d'Orcia reflects the rural traditions of the Val d'Orcia and Monte Amiata: sheep's milk pecorino cheese, produced by local farms, is one of the stars of the table, alongside extra virgin olive oil and typical Tuscan cured meats. In the Vivo d'Orcia area, at the foot of Monte Amiata, chestnut harvesting gives rise to autumn dishes and desserts rooted in the mountain culture. The valley's vineyards produce Orcia DOC wines, often served in the village's trattorias alongside simple dishes based on legumes, mushrooms and garden produce.
