Die Geschichte von Trissino
History and origins
The first settlement at Trissino dates back to the eleventh century, when a fortified structure stood on the hill. In the fifteenth century the medieval building was transformed into a country residence and, between 1718 and 1722, the villa took on its present appearance thanks to the work of the architect Francesco Muttoni, commissioned by the Trissino family. After being abandoned following the Second World War, the complex was purchased in 1951 by Count Giannino Marzotto, who carried out a careful restoration that returned it to its former splendour.
What to see
Villa Trissino Marzotto is the town's main landmark, with its eighteenth century park designed by Francesco Muttoni: paths laid out at different levels on the hillside, covered and open passages, panoramic belvederes and hanging gardens. Descending from the upper villa to the lower one, visitors encounter more than a hundred statues, mostly of mythological subjects, made by the workshop of Orazio and Angelo Marinali. The lemon tree avenue leads to the octagonal parterre with its Italian style garden, one of the most photographed corners of the complex.
Nature and surroundings
The Agno Valley, where Trissino is located, marks the transition between the Vicenza plain and the first pre-Alpine slopes. The municipal territory offers hillside and wooded trails suited to walking and cycling, with views ranging from the valley floor to the hills closing the horizon to the north.
Local life and economy
Over the course of the twentieth century, Trissino developed an industrial base linked in particular to the chemical and plastics processing sectors, becoming one of the productive hubs of the Agno Valley. This industrial vocation coexists with the town's more iconic image, tied to Villa Trissino Marzotto, and with a residual agricultural economy in the hillside areas.
Events and traditions
The park and the villa periodically host guided tours and cultural events, often linked to the Venetian Villas circuit or to events dedicated to the historic garden, which represents one of the town's main attractions beyond the boundaries of the Agno Valley.
Getting there
Trissino lies about twenty kilometres north west of Vicenza, easily reached by car along the road that climbs the Agno Valley towards Valdagno. Its foothill position makes it a natural point of passage for anyone travelling between the Vicenza plain and the pre-Alpine valleys.
