L'histoire de Taibon Agordino
At the gateway to the Belluno Dolomites
Taibon Agordino lies in the Cordevole valley, at the heart of the Agordino area, in the province of Belluno, in a mountain setting that is fully part of the Belluno Dolomites recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The municipal territory covers a broad and varied area, rising from the valley floor to the higher elevations of the surrounding Dolomite groups, offering a range of landscapes from conifer forests to vertical rock walls. It is a mountain municipality in the truest sense, where tourism tied to hiking and climbing still stands alongside the traditional herding and forestry activities typical of the Agordino.
The Valle di San Lucano, the Yosemite of the Dolomites
Taibon Agordino's natural jewel is undoubtedly the Valle di San Lucano, an area of great charm often described as the Yosemite of the Dolomites for its wild, untouched landscape, rich in forests and springs and enclosed by the steep walls of the surrounding Dolomite peaks, including Mount Agnèr and the Pale di San Lucano. The valley also holds smaller but striking features, such as the San Lucano cave, the Tegnas stream and waterfalls like the Cascate dell'Inferno and di Pont, a destination for both summer and winter excursions. In recent years the area has gained growing popularity among wingsuit enthusiasts too, who hold an annual festival dedicated to the discipline here.
Mount Agnèr and the longest vertical walls in the Dolomites
Mount Agnèr, which dominates the Valle di San Lucano with its famous north face, is one of the main draws for climbers from around the world: a vertical drop of over 1,500-1,600 metres, considered the longest rock overhang in the Dolomites and the second longest in the whole Alps. Around the Agnèr runs a network of trails and climbing routes of varying difficulty, with bivouacs such as Cozzolino, Bedin and Biasin allowing climbers to safely tackle the most demanding ascents, including the historic northwest ridge, opened by local mountaineers who left their mark on Agordino climbing history. Even those who do not climb can admire the mountain's bulk from the valley-floor trails.
A park of water, forests and trails
A large part of Taibon Agordino's territory falls within the Parco Nazionale Dolomiti Bellunesi, a protected area safeguarding natural heritage of great value, from beech and conifer forests to alpine wildlife and the watercourses flowing down toward the Cordevole. The municipality's trail network offers routes suited to different levels of preparation, from simple walks to the waterfalls to more demanding treks venturing into the Valle di San Lucano, also practicable by mountain bike or snowshoe in winter. It is a territory suited to slow, mindful tourism, oriented toward the discovery of nature rather than organised entertainment.
A mountain village between tradition and sport
The village of Taibon Agordino, set along the Cordevole, retains the typical character of Agordino villages, with stone and timber houses, a parish church as the community's focal point and daily life still marked by the rhythm of the mountain seasons. Alongside traditional herding and forest management, recent decades have seen the growth of tourism tied to hiking, climbing and air sports, which has made the municipality a reference point for outdoor enthusiasts from across Italy and abroad. It is a balance not always easy to maintain, but one that has so far allowed Taibon Agordino to preserve its identity as a genuine mountain village.
