Le récit
L'histoire de Nogarole Rocca
The plain between Verona and Mantua
The municipality lies in the Bassa Veronese, the wide farming plain that stretches south of Verona toward the border with the province of Mantua. The landscape is typical of the Po Valley in Veneto, made up of cultivated fields, drainage canals and small towns spaced apart, with an economy historically tied to agriculture and, more recently, to a widespread network of craft and small industry too.
The Nogarola rocca
The origins of the rocca date back to the ninth century, and the stronghold's name, like that of the municipality, derives from the Nogarolis family, of French origin, who arrived in Italy in the tenth century. In 1233 the defensive structure was burned by the Guelphs of Mantua and was later rebuilt, between 1240 and 1243, by Enrico da Egna. In 1345 Mastino II della Scala began building the Serraglio, the long fortified line that ran from Valeggio sul Mincio to Nogarole Rocca in defence of Veronese territory, and in 1405 the rocca passed under the rule of the Republic of Venice.
The corte bassa and the farming complex
Next to the rocca stands the so-called corte bassa, once a complex of farm buildings that formed the castle's ancient outer fortification, linked to the upper part by a single-arch medieval bridge. This group of structures, now partly restored, bears witness to the rocca's twofold role over the centuries: a military stronghold defending the territory and, at the same time, the administrative centre of a farming estate attached to the court.
The hamlets of Pradelle and Bagnolo
Besides the main town, the municipality includes the hamlets of Pradelle and Bagnolo, small rural settlements that share the same agricultural character of the territory. Life in these hamlets still follows the rhythms of the countryside, with farms and livestock operations coexisting alongside a residential fabric that has grown in recent decades thanks to the proximity of Verona and the industrial area of Villafranca.
