L'histoire de Musile di Piave
History and origins
The land of Musile di Piave is part of the reclaimed lower Venetian plain, an area that until the early twentieth century was largely marshland subject to the Piave's floods. The town's name itself reflects its close relationship with the river, which shaped its economy and daily life for centuries. The dramatic turning point came with the First World War: after the rout of Caporetto in the autumn of 1917, the Italian army dug in along the Piave, and the municipality found itself on the front line. Between November 1917 and June 1918, the area around Caposile, where the Piave Vecchia meets the waters of the Sile, became one of the most contested points of the defence, repeatedly mentioned in war bulletins. At the end of the conflict the half-destroyed town was rebuilt during the 1920s, alongside the completion of the major hydraulic reclamation works.
What to see and main sights
At Caposile stands the Tempio ai Caduti del Basso Piave, a temple built in memory of the soldiers who fell fighting in the area, flanked by the Monument to the Heroes of the Piave: it is the symbolic site of the municipality's wartime memory, set at the striking point where the Piave Vecchia and the Sile meet. In the main town, visitors can see the parish church and the marks of twentieth-century reconstruction that gave the centre its current layout. Walking along the embankments, traces of a community that had to rebuild almost from scratch after the war can still be read today in the place names and small monuments scattered through the hamlets of Croce and Millepertiche.
Nature and surroundings
The landscape of Musile di Piave is shaped by water: the Piave flows along the municipality's northern boundary, while at Caposile it receives the Sile, at a confluence of striking natural beauty. The river embankments offer flat paths suited to walking and cycling, with views over the reclaimed countryside and the canals that still regulate water flow today. The proximity to the Jesolo coast, reachable in a few minutes by car, makes the area a convenient stop for those seeking a quieter alternative to the seaside, amid embankments, reed beds and stretches of water frequented by waterfowl.
Food, wine and local produce
Agriculture remains a pillar of the local economy, a direct legacy of the reclamation works that turned marshland into farmland. The lower Piave area falls within the Piave DOC wine denomination, which covers red and white wines produced in the countryside between Treviso and Venice. Alongside vines, farmers grow grain, vegetables and forage crops, in a lowland agriculture that supplies local markets and the restaurants of the nearby coast.
Events and traditions
The memory of the First World War is at the centre of the municipality's public initiatives, with commemorative ceremonies concentrated mainly around 4 November and the anniversaries of the Battle of the Piave in June 1918, which involve the Temple at Caposile. Alongside these historical events, local associations enliven the year with village festivals and initiatives promoted by the Pro Loco, simple but heartfelt moments that mark the calendar of the hamlets.
How to get there and location
Musile di Piave lies in the Veneto Orientale, a few kilometres north of San Donà di Piave and close to the A4 Venice-Trieste motorway exit. Its position, halfway between the agricultural hinterland and the Jesolo coast, makes it a convenient waypoint for those moving between Venice, the seaside and the inland areas of the lower Piave.
Local life and economy
Musile di Piave's economy remains linked mainly to agriculture and to the small-scale craft and commercial activities serving the resident population. Its closeness to San Donà di Piave and the coast has encouraged residential growth in recent decades, with families choosing to live in a quieter setting while remaining just minutes from the area's employment and tourist hubs.
