History and origins
Marano di Valpolicella lies at the heart of the Valpolicella Classica, the hilly area northwest of Verona where winegrowing has extremely ancient roots, already documented in Roman times. The municipal territory preserves important traces of the Lombard presence and the subsequent development of a rural organisation based on small autonomous hamlets, many of which have kept their own name and distinct identity within the municipality to this day. Marano's history is closely interwoven with that of winegrowing, which has shaped the landscape and economy of these hills for centuries.
The church of San Giorgio di Valpolicella
Marano's most valuable monument is the Pieve of San Giorgio di Valpolicella, one of the most significant examples of Romanesque architecture in the province of Verona. The church, built on a site of ancient occupation, stands out for the sober elegance of its Romanesque forms and for decorative elements testifying to its long history, including earlier remains reused in its construction. Molina and the Waterfalls Park
The hamlet of Molina is home to one of Valpolicella's most surprising natural corners: the Waterfalls Park, a green area crossed by streams that form several waterfalls set among lush vegetation, once used to power old mills, from which the hamlet takes its name. Marano di Valpolicella is considered one of the key municipalities of the Valpolicella Classica, the historic sub-zone that produces some of the finest grapes destined for Amarone and Recioto della Valpolicella wines. Marano's hills, favourably exposed and characterised by calcareous soils, host vineyards trained using the traditional Verona pergola system, where Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella grapes are partly dried to produce the area's celebrated raisin wines. Wine culture here is not just an economic activity but a deep-rooted territorial identity.
How to get there and surroundings
Marano di Valpolicella lies about 20 kilometres northwest of Verona, easily reached by car via the hillside roads connecting the various municipalities of the Valpolicella Classica, including Fumane, San Pietro in Cariano and Negrar. It is a natural stop along the Valpolicella Wine Road, ideal for those combining winery tastings, cultural visits and nature walks, while remaining a short distance from Lake Garda and the centre of Verona.
