Introduction and location
Follonica is located on the Tyrrhenian coast of Tuscany, in the northern part of the province of Grosseto, within the historical region of Maremma. The inhabited center faces directly onto the Gulf of Follonica, a wide inlet closed to the north by the promontory of Piombino and to the south by the Punta Ala peninsula, with the island of Elba visible on the horizon on clear days. The coastal location, combined with the proximity of the Maremma hills and the inland woods, makes Follonica a convenient starting point for both beach tourism and excursions into the surrounding Tuscan countryside.
History and origins
L'attuale assetto urbano di Follonica nacque nell'Ottocento intorno a un grande complesso siderurgico voluto dal Granducato di Toscana per la lavorazione del ferro estratto dall'isola d'Elba e dalle vicine colline metallifere. Le antiche fonderie, con i loro forni fusori e gli edifici in stile neoclassico, plasmarono il tessuto cittadino e l'identità della comunità operaia che vi si stabilì. Con il progressivo declino dell'attività industriale nel Novecento, Follonica ha saputo riconvertirsi al turismo balneare, conservando però tracce visibili del suo passato produttivo negli edifici storici del centro.
Natura e paesaggio
Il paesaggio di Follonica è dominato dal lungo arenile che si estende per diversi chilometri lungo il golfo, orlato da un'ampia pineta litoranea che offre ombra naturale e percorsi pedonali e ciclabili immersi nel verde. Dietro la fascia costiera si aprono le colline della Maremma, con boschi di lecci e macchia mediterranea che custodiscono una fauna e una flora tipiche dell'entroterra toscano. Il contrasto tra mare aperto, pineta e paesaggio collinare rende il territorio adatto sia a chi cerca relax in spiaggia sia a chi preferisce passeggiate ed escursioni nella natura.
Cosa fare e cosa vedere
Anyone visiting Follonica can spend time on its equipped and free beaches, stroll through the center among buildings linked to the industrial past, or visit the museum spaces created in the ancient foundry environments, dedicated to the history of ironworking and artistic cast iron production. The seafront and the pine forest are suitable for cycling or walking routes, while nearby you can organize trips to the inland hills or to the Maremma coast further south. The town also offers a wide selection of bars and bathing establishments active mainly in the summer season.
