San Fior 的故事
Between hill and plain
The territory of San Fior is divided between two clearly distinct landscapes: the hill of Castello Roganzuolo, overlooking the Treviso plain, and the flat areas of San Fior di Sopra and San Fior di Sotto. This dual geographical identity is also reflected in the municipality's history, with a hilltop nucleus of ancient origins and a lowland fabric that developed later around agricultural activities.
The hill of Castello Roganzuolo
The hill on which Castello Roganzuolo stands was an important pre-Roman Paleo-Venetic centre, evidence of a very ancient settlement in this part of the Treviso area. The name San Fior first appears in a document from 1074, and from 1337, continuously until 1797, the territory was part of the Republic of Venice, included in the administrative district of Conegliano.
Masterpieces in the churches: Titian and Cima da Conegliano
At the top of the Castellari hill stands the church of Saints Peter and Paul, one of the most precious buildings in San Fior: inside are frescoes by Francesco da Milano, an altarpiece by Frigimelica and, above all, a polyptych attributed to Titian depicting the Madonna and Child with Saints Peter and Paul. In the plain, the church of San Giovanni Battista preserves another masterpiece, the polyptych of Saint John the Baptist by Cima da Conegliano, made up of eight panels within a wooden frame.
The Prosecco hills
The territory of San Fior is one of the fifteen municipalities of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG denomination, whose hills have been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Vineyards and rows of vines alternate with the hilly landscape around Castello Roganzuolo, combining the area's wine making vocation with its historical and artistic heritage.
