Noventa Vicentina 的故事
History and origins
The historic core of Noventa Vicentina grew up around the Villa Barbarigo complex, begun in 1588 by the noble Venetian Barbarigo family, present in the town since 1540 and counting two doges of Venice among its members. Over the centuries the villa passed to other prominent families, including the Loredan, the Rezzonico and the Pindemonte, before being acquired by the municipality in 1891, which used it first as a school and later as the town hall, a role it still holds today.
What to see
The main landmark remains Villa Barbarigo Rezzonico, its imposing four storey structure dominating the town centre: today it houses the municipal offices, but on special occasions its historic rooms are opened to the public. Around the villa lies the oldest part of the town, with the main square and a few religious buildings that bear witness to the town's long history as a reference point for the Bassa Vicentina.
Countryside and territory
The landscape around Noventa Vicentina is typical of the Venetian lowlands: fields of cereals and fodder crops, irrigation canals crossing the countryside, tree rows and scattered farmhouses. It is an area best explored slowly by bike or by car, taking in the geometric order of the fields and the calm of a still well preserved agricultural landscape, just a short drive from the better known Berici Hills.
Food and wine
Local cuisine follows the tradition of the Bassa Vicentina, closely tied to the produce of the land: risottos, seasonal vegetables, meat based dishes and the solid Venetian tradition of salt cod and polenta. The trattorias in and around the town serve honest, unpretentious food, made for the people who work the land and for those passing through it.
Getting there
Noventa Vicentina is easily reached along the regional road that runs through the Bassa Vicentina, about thirty kilometres from Vicenza and close to the border with the province of Padua and the Polesine area. Its central position between these three territories makes it a convenient stop for anyone exploring the Venetian countryside between the region's art cities.
Local life and economy
The economy of Noventa Vicentina remains strongly tied to agriculture, alongside small and medium sized craft and commercial businesses. It is a lived in town, with community life still marked by the weekly market, neighbourhood festivals and the everyday activities of a community that identifies with its historic centre and the villa that has become its symbol.
