Valle Aurina 的故事

Italy's Northernmost Valley, Toward the Tauern

Valle Aurina holds a precise geographic record: it is Italy's northernmost municipality. The valley runs north starting from Campo Tures, following the course of the Aurino stream, and climbs progressively up to Casere, the last settlement before the watershed with Austria and East Tyrol. Closing it off at the far end rise the Vette dei Tauri, the southern spur of the High Tauern massif, with peaks exceeding three thousand metres. Its highest and most symbolic point is the Dreiherrnspitze (Pizzo dei Tre Signori, 3,499 m), historically recognised as a meeting point between different alpine border territories. This extreme position makes Valle Aurina a frontier in the truest sense: the last strip of Italy before the Austrian Alps, where Tyrolean language, architecture and traditions remain very strong, and where the landscape grows increasingly rugged and alpine as the valley floor rises.

The Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park

A large part of the eastern side of Valle Aurina lies within the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park, one of the largest and least developed protected areas in South Tyrol. The park takes its name from the small glaciers that still crown its highest peaks, feeding rushing streams and spectacular waterfalls that plunge down rock faces. The landscape alternates larch and stone pine woods, alpine pastures dotted with mountain huts, glacial moraine lakes and high-altitude environments where rare species such as the golden eagle, the bearded vulture and the ibex still survive. The park's well-marked trail network, suited to different levels of fitness, links the valley floor to alpine huts and mountain refuges, offering privileged viewpoints over the Vette dei Tauri. It is a territory designed for slow, respectful enjoyment, where alpine wilderness remains the true protagonist.

The Mining History of Predoi

The village of Predoi, in the upper part of the valley, preserves one of the most significant mining testimonies in the entire Alpine arc: for centuries copper was extracted here, digging deep galleries into the heart of the mountain. Today the old mining complex has become a museum open to visitors, where the work of the miners can be retraced on foot, or aboard the small mine train, among historic tools, tunnels and stories of exceptionally hard labour carried out at high altitude and in extreme climatic conditions. Thanks to their particular microclimate, with constant humidity and pure, allergen-free air, the same galleries are today also used as a climate therapy centre for respiratory conditions, a use that blends industrial memory with contemporary wellbeing. Visiting the Predoi mine is one of the most original and identity-defining experiences in all of Valle Aurina.

The Valley's Villages and Tyrolean Culture

Climbing up the valley, one encounters the main villages, each with its own character. Cadipietra, the municipal seat, is the reference point for services, shops and events, with its church and well-preserved historic core. San Giovanni, a little further up, shows a typically Tyrolean layout of scattered farmsteads, well-tended meadows and a stillness that invites visitors to slow down. Casere, the last village before the Austrian border, is instead the gateway to the wildest Alps, a starting point for hikes toward high-altitude refuges and the park's glaciers. Throughout the valley a strongly German-speaking cultural identity survives, with the everyday use of German and the South Tyrolean dialect, the wooden architecture of the farmsteads, alpine huts, and a craft tradition still tied to woodworking and mountain dairy products.

Skiing, Hiking and High-Altitude Nature

Valle Aurina is a ski destination especially appreciated by those seeking slopes less crowded than other areas of South Tyrol. The Klausberg ski area, above Cadipietra, offers well-exposed slopes with panoramic views over the Vette dei Tauri, while Speikboden, at the valley's entrance, is also known for lifts offering sweeping views over the surrounding Alps as far as the Dolomites. In summer the scene changes completely: the valley becomes ideal terrain for hikes of every level, from easy walks among the farmsteads to more demanding treks toward the refuges and the park's glaciers, up to alpine routes leading to the highest peaks, including the Dreiherrnspitze massif. Waterfalls, alpine lakes and mountain huts serving local products complete an outdoor offering that makes Valle Aurina a destination for every season.
