San Pancrazio

San Pancrazio (St. Pankraz) is the starting point for trails that quickly gain altitude, offering views of the entire Val d'Ultimo and, on clearer days, of the surrounding peaks of the South Tyrolean Alpine arc. The lateral Val di Mara, above the hamlet of Buchen, is one of the quietest hiking destinations in the municipality, while the slopes of Guardia Alta and Monte Luco offer more challenging routes towards high-altitude pastures and refuges. In winter, the valley transforms into one of the most popular areas in South Tyrol for cross-country skiing, thanks to abundant snow and a relatively flat valley floor, ideal for long loops through snow-covered farmsteads. Further up from San Pancrazio, Val d'Ultimo eventually leads to the borders of the Stelvio National Park, of which the municipality of Ultimo is a part, making the entire valley a natural corridor connecting the South Tyrolean valley floor to one of Europe's largest alpine parks.

History, traditions, and experiences to live

The first certain records of San Pancrazio date back to 1098, when a Latin document mentions the 'ecclesia S. Pancracii in Ultun', the church dedicated to the patron saint from whom the village takes its name. In the Middle Ages, the territory was governed by the Counts of Ultimo, a branch of the Counts of Eppan, who in the 12th century had the Ultimo Castle built, of which ruins remain today. Their history intertwines with that of the Eschenlohe family, who inherited their legacy after the extinction of the lineage. For a long time a hamlet of the larger territory of Ultimo, San Pancrazio only regained administrative autonomy in the mid-20th century. The parish church, with its 56-meter-high bell tower, and the Chapel of Sant'Elena, located at 1,550 meters and already mentioned in 1338, still mark the community's religious calendar today, while Tyrolean peasant traditions, from customs related to livestock to winter rituals, remain alive among the valley's farmsteads, offering visitors an authentic experience of German-speaking alpine culture in the heart of Trentino-Alto Adige.

Not to be missed

  • Ruins of the Castle of Ultimo, the 12th-century stronghold of the Counts of Ultimo
  • A walk toward the millennial larches of Santa Gertrude, further up the Ulten Valley
  • The historic Beckenchristlhof farmstead, an example of Tyrolean rural architecture
  • A hike into the side valley of Val di Mara, above the hamlet of Buchen
  • Cross-country skiing or a winter walk along the snow-covered valley floor
