A powerful maritime republic
In the Middle Ages Pisa was one of the four Italian maritime republics, a commercial and naval power that dominated the Mediterranean and from which its artistic wealth derives. Set along the Arno, just before the river reaches the sea, the city preserves the legacy of that greatness in monuments, churches and palaces. Today Pisa is also a lively university city, home to ancient academies and the Scuola Normale, giving it a young, cosmopolitan energy alongside its prestigious past.
The Square of Miracles
The monumental heart of Pisa is Piazza del Duomo, famous as the Square of Miracles and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where four Romanesque masterpieces line the green lawn: the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Monumental Camposanto and the world-famous Leaning Tower, in fact the cathedral's bell tower, whose tilt makes it one of the most photographed monuments in the world. Climbing to the top of the tower along its spiral staircase offers an unforgettable view over the square and the city's rooftops.
The Lungarni and the centre
Away from the crowds of the tower, Pisa reveals an elegant and authentic centre. The Lungarni, the streets running along the river, are lined with colourful buildings and home to the small, precious Gothic church of Santa Maria della Spina. Piazza dei Cavalieri, once the centre of civic power, preserves the frescoed Palazzo della Carovana, today home to the Scuola Normale. Among Borgo Stretto, the shops and the cafés, the city offers pleasant walks and lesser-known but highly charming corners.
Between river and sea
Pisa's position, between the hills and the coast, makes it an ideal base for exploring northern Tuscany. A few kilometres away lies the Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli Nature Park, with pine woods, dunes and wetlands facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, while the coast of Marina di Pisa and Tirrenia offers beaches and sunsets over the sea. Its proximity to Lucca, the Versilia and Florence makes the city a convenient starting point for those wishing to discover the region's art and nature.
Pisan flavours and traditions
Pisan cuisine is rooted in both rural and maritime traditions: chickpea cecina, bordatino, legume soups and coastal fish dishes coexist with meats from the countryside. Not to be missed is the Gioco del Ponte, the spectacular historical re-enactment in June that pits the two sides of the city against each other on the Ponte di Mezzo, and the evocative Luminara di San Ranieri, when the Lungarni glow with thousands of little flames. Traditions that tell of Pisa's pride and identity.
