The capital of the Maremma
Grosseto is the main centre of the Maremma, the vast area of southern Tuscany once marshy and malarial, reclaimed only in modern times and today famous for its wide, wild landscapes. The city grew in importance under the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, when the Medici and later the Lorraine made it the administrative hub of the territory. Unlike the hilltop art cities, Grosseto has a lowland character, tied to the countryside, livestock and a powerful nature that still defines the identity of the Maremma today.
The Medici walls and the centre
Grosseto's distinctive feature is its imposing Medici walls, built in the sixteenth century with a characteristic hexagonal shape and six corner bastions, among the best-preserved Renaissance defensive circuits in Italy. Never demolished, they have been turned into a tree-lined promenade encircling the entire historic centre, offering a scenic route through greenery. Within the walls gather Piazza Dante, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo with its white-and-red striped façade and the alleys of the centre, where you breathe the quiet atmosphere of a human-scale city.
Nature, park and sea
Grosseto is the ideal base for exploring some of the most beautiful natural areas in Tuscany. A few kilometres away lies the Maremma Nature Park, with the Uccellina hills, pine woods, Mediterranean scrub, wild beaches and the mouth of the Ombrone, home to roe deer, wild boar and free-roaming horses. The coast offers the long sandy beaches of Marina di Grosseto, Principina and Castiglione della Pescaia, while the hinterland gives hills, spas and villages. A territory that combines sea, nature and silence in a rare way.
Etruscan and Roman history
The Maremma is one of the cradles of Etruscan civilisation, and around Grosseto there are important remains of the past. The archaeological area of Roselle, an ancient Etruscan then Roman city, preserves polygonal walls, baths, the amphitheatre and the remains of the forum, offering an evocative walk among the ruins on the hill. The Archaeological and Art Museum of the Maremma, in the city, gathers finds from the whole territory. Not far away, villages such as Vetulonia further tell the richness of a land inhabited for millennia.
Maremma flavours and traditions
Maremma cuisine is robust and genuine, tied to the countryside and livestock: acquacotta, a bread and vegetable soup, Maremma tortelli, wild boar meat and pecorino cheeses are its symbolic dishes, paired with the wines of Morellino di Scansano. Deeply rooted is the figure of the buttero, the horseman who still today leads herds of free-roaming Maremma cattle. Among festivals, livestock fairs and rural traditions, Grosseto and its land offer an authentic experience off the beaten track.
